Number 1. Robert Downey Jr.’s Windmill House
If you think a windmill can’t be a home for a celebrity worth 300 million dollars, then you are wrong. Robert Downey Jr., known for his stunning acting in Iron Man and Sherlock Holmes, has been in the industry for many years and knows the value of a true masterpiece.
One of such most impressive projects is his windmill house, located in East Hampton, New York. And that’s not a joke. The windmill house priced at 11.9 million dollars is a unique and stunning property that stands out among the traditional houses in Santa Barbara, where he had fairy-tale-like days with his wife Susan Downey. The house is designed in the style of a traditional Dutch windmill, with its iconic sloping roof and rotating blades. The estate features seven bedrooms, six full baths, five half baths, and a three-car garage. It is a testament to Downey’s creativity and vision, as he took a traditional design and put his own modern spin on it. But how did he land upon such amazing architecture?
The idea behind the windmill house was born after the Downey couple met designer Joe Nahem while renting the heavenly Amagansett country house. Getting intrigued by the designer’s home and enjoying a new fruitful friendship, the Iron Man star had a request to find a nice property for him.
After searching for a few months, Nahem discovered an ideal location: a windmill from the late 19th century. Originally built as a playhouse, it had structural additions built upon it over the decades that followed its construction, converting it into a fully functional residence. Among the estate’s numerous advantages were its closeness to East Hampton town while maintaining privacy in a remote setting, the charming gardens created by landscape architect Joseph Tyree for the house’s former owners, and those magnificent trees that sprouted from the lawns like sculptures.
