Los Feliz Home: Short Backstory
The historic property in Los Feliz, California, cost Jolie 25 million dollars. It had previously been the longtime home of late filmmaker Cecil B. DeMille, famous for Hollywood Golden Age classics such as “The Ten Commandments” and “Samson and Delilah.” The director purchased the property from a local businessman in 1916 and lived there until his death in 1959.
The home later underwent a substantial six-year renovation. The sellers kept many original details and added some modern amenities. Los Angeles family architect duo Tichenor&Thorp significantly raised the ceilings and expanded the kitchen and library into the former servants’ quarters. The famous architects additionally updated the garden with period plants.
Exterior
The Los Feliz home boasts a classic old Hollywood-style pool framed by rolling lawns and rose gardens and complemented by the adjacent pool house and arched fountains. There’s also a studio house with an individual entrance, a home gym, a tea house, and a wine cellar. The site provides breathtaking views from the observatory to the Pacific Ocean.
The main house, built in 1913, is in the Beaux Arts style and surrounded by huge, 2.1-acre landscaped gardens, which Angelina deeply loved. She commented, “I love most that there is no entertainment room, but lots of pathways and places to walk and think.” The mansion also has a second swimming pool and sun loungers in the gardens.
