INSIDE Medici Family Houses. History Goes for Over 300 Years!

The Medici family was a powerful and influential family in Florence, Italy, during the Renaissance period. They were one of the most prominent and wealthy families in Europe, known for their banking and political prowess. The family’s rise to power began in the 15th century when Cosimo de’ Medici took control of the family’s banking business and used his wealth to gain political influence in Florence.

As one of the most powerful and influential families in Renaissance Florence, the Medici family resided in several grand Palaces and fourteen villas that are now listed under the UNESCO site. These grand homes were not only symbols of their wealth and power, but also served as centers of art, culture, and politics.

Today we are about to embark on the journey to the historical marks in Florence, Tuscany region, to visit three grand Palaces and two villas that serve as museums and showcase numerous works of art by many artists, including Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. The Medici family also built the famous Boboli Gardens behind the Palazzo Pitti, and we can’t avoid its beauty even in the virtual tour. So let’s go ahead!

Palazzo Medici Riccardi
One of the most famous Medici residences is the Palazzo Medici Riccardi, designed by Michelozzo di Bartolomeo for Cosimo the Elder in the mid-15th century. This palace served as the primary residence of the Medici family until they moved to the Palazzo Vecchio in the early 16th century.

The Palazzo Medici Riccardi features a beautifully decorated courtyard, stunning frescoes by Benozzo Gozzoli, and a chapel decorated by Filippo Lippi. The façade of the building is characterized by its simple and symmetrical design, with a series of arched windows and pilasters running along the length of the building. The building materials used for the construction were meant to accentuate the structure of the building through the threefold grading of masonry, rusticated blocks on the ground floor, the ashlar face of the top story, and the cornice. The use of smooth stone and elegant proportions give the palazzo a sense of harmony and grandeur. The overall effect is one of understated elegance, reflecting the Medici family’s taste for classical beauty and sophistication.
