Palazzo Medici Riccardi
One of the most famous Medici residences is the Palazzo Medici Riccardi, designed by Michelozzo di Bartolomeo for Cosimo the Elder in the mid-15th century. This palace served as the primary residence of the Medici family until they moved to the Palazzo Vecchio in the early 16th century.
The Palazzo Medici Riccardi features a beautifully decorated courtyard, stunning frescoes by Benozzo Gozzoli, and a chapel decorated by Filippo Lippi. The façade of the building is characterized by its simple and symmetrical design, with a series of arched windows and pilasters running along the length of the building. The building materials used for the construction were meant to accentuate the structure of the building through the threefold grading of masonry, rusticated blocks on the ground floor, the ashlar face of the top story, and the cornice. The use of smooth stone and elegant proportions give the palazzo a sense of harmony and grandeur. The overall effect is one of understated elegance, reflecting the Medici family’s taste for classical beauty and sophistication.
