In the beloved novel Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell, Tara is the name of the plantation home of the O’Hara family. We bet you remember! Situated in Georgia, Tara is a sprawling and majestic plantation that serves as the backdrop for much of the novel’s action. However, one of the most memorable scenes in the book takes place at Twelve Oaks, the neighboring plantation home of the Wilkes family. This scene is pivotal in the development of the story and the relationships between the characters.
Author Margaret Mitchell allegedly submitted a copy of the Atlanta Journal photo of the property, along with a handwritten note that said, “I like this for Ashley’s home,” to the film’s production crew while the book was being turned into a movie.
